What Are the Symptoms of Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer develops when abnormal cells begin to grow in the mouth, lips, tongue, or throat. Caught early, oral cancer has one of the highest treatment success rates of any cancer, which is why routine oral cancer screening matters so much. While adults over 45 face a higher risk, oral cancer can affect anyone, so it’s worth booking a screening if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Discoloured patches inside your mouth or on your lips, whether white, red, or dark in colour.
  • New lumps, bumps, or areas of unusual texture that weren’t there before.
  • Sores or canker sores that won’t heal, along with numb patches or unexplained bleeding.
  • A tongue that feels different than usual, changes in your sense of taste, or trouble swallowing.

What Increases Your Risk of Oral Cancer?

Certain habits and health conditions are linked to a higher risk of developing oral cancer. Being aware of these risk factors can help you and your dentist decide how often you should be screened. They include:

  • Smoking or using tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco.
  • Heavy or moderate alcohol use, particularly when combined with tobacco.
  • Possible infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) in the mouth.
  • Frequent, unprotected exposure to the sun.
  • A diet lacking in fruits, vegetables, and other nutrients that support oral health.
  • A family history of oral cancer.
  • Being male, since oral cancer occurs more often in men than in women.
  • A history of leukoplakia, a thick, whitish patch that can develop inside the mouth.

Oral Cancer Prevention, Detection, and Treatment

Every case of oral cancer is different, so treatment is always planned individually based on the severity, type, and location of the suspected cancer.

Spotting the Early Signs of Oral Cancer

The purpose of an oral cancer screening is to catch cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth as early as possible. During your exam, your dentist will carefully check the inside of your mouth and under your tongue for red or white patches, sores, or other suspicious changes. Your dentist will also gently feel the soft tissues in your mouth for lumps or unusual texture, along with the outside of your throat and neck, since early detection plays a major role in successful treatment outcomes.

Diagnosing and Treating Oral Cancer

If your dentist notices any signs of concern during your oral cancer screening, you may be referred for further testing, such as a biopsy, where a small sample of the suspicious tissue is examined in a lab, or imaging like Xrays, ultrasounds, CT scans, or an MRI. If a tumour is confirmed, treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy, depending on your specific diagnosis.

How to Help Prevent Oral Cancer

The good news is there’s a lot you can do now to lower your risk of oral cancer later. Visiting your dentist regularly for routine exams, avoiding tobacco products, and drinking alcohol in moderation are some of the most effective steps you can take. It also helps to limit your sun exposure and use a U/V protective lip balm, eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and check your own mouth regularly during brushing and flossing for anything unusual so you can bring it up with your dentist right away.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any of the risk factors for oral cancer it’s a good idea to ask for an oral cancer screening at your regular dental exam. If you have discovered an unusually coloured or textured patch in your mouth or a lump or suspicious sore you’re encouraged to schedule an appointment to get it checked out.
Your dentist will examine your lips and the inside of your mouth including your cheeks, gums and all sides of your tongue. They will also carefully feel around for any lumps or unusual textures. The dentist may also feel your face, jaw, throat and neck for unusual lumps or tenderness.
Wash your hands with warm soapy water. In front of your bathroom mirror, you’ll want to examine the roof of your mouth, your lips, tongue and gums. Pull your top lip up and bottom lip down to see behind them. You may use a piece of gauze or a cotton pad to help you grip your tongue to check the sides and underside. Do your best to look at your gums, and use your fingers to feel the insides of your mouth. You’re looking and feeling for colour changes, lumps and bumps, unusual textures or tenderness. Let your dentist know if you have any sores that have not healed after two weeks.
Small, usually painless, flat patches that may appear red, white, gray or yellow with red edges. These small patches can affect any area of the mouth including the lips, gums, cheeks, tongue and the roof of the mouth. As a good rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to have anything that looks or feels unusual checked out by your doctor or dentist.

Amazing experience and great patient care from start to finish as always. The team here at Smyl Bloor is amazing, always making sure to address concerns in a friendly yet professional manner. What was once a one-and-done visit for an opinion on teeth aligners, to actually having them done, had made me considered making them my go-to location for all my dental concerns and regular oral checkups. A huge shoutout to Dr. Yiu and Dr. Matt, technicians Shiva, Joana and Laura, and receptionists Taneshia and Andrea for making me feel welcome on every visit.

I can't recommend Smyl enough. I got all 4 wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Mat and Shiva. I would suggest to anyone that they are the best people to do it. They made me feel comfortable and safe. Answered any questions I had and explained everything clearly. I was anxious and they definitely helped ease my anxiety. Not to mention I felt absolutely nothing during the process and it was extremely quick. I also got the same treatment from Andrea at the front - she was patient with me and answered any questions I had. The whole team made a really anxiety inducing exprience feel easy and I felt taken care of and supported!

I had been struggling with a very serious dental infection for nearly a year, which unfortunately caused damage to my jawbone and left me in constant pain. Despite visiting several dentists, no one was able to properly diagnose the issue. Thankfully, I finally found an experienced and highly knowledgeable doctor who is truly up to date with modern dentistry. In just one session, all of my dental problems were addressed, and for the first time in a long time, I finally felt relief from the pain. I am incredibly grateful for the care and professionalism I received. The entire team was professional, kind, compassionate, and welcoming throughout the whole process. I sincerely appreciate everything they did for me and would especially like to thank Dr. Yiu and dear Shiva Jan from the bottom of my heart. I truly wish them continued health, happiness, and success.
