Am I a Good Candidate for Dentures?

Did you know that roughly one quarter of adults over 65 are missing all of their natural teeth? Dentures remain one of the most common, reliable, and natural-looking solutions for missing teeth. In fact, you’ve likely spoken to someone wearing full or partial dentures without ever noticing. So how do you know if you might be a good candidate for dentures?

To be a good candidate for this restorative treatment, you should:

  • Want to replace several teeth or a full arch.
  • Not smoke or use other tobacco products.
  • Have a healthy jawbone to support your dentures (and if not, we can help with that).
  • Not struggle with chronic dry mouth.
  • Be ready to properly care for your dentures at home.
  • Continue seeing your dentist for routine exams, just like you would with natural teeth.

Wondering how to care for your dentures? Routine dental cleanings and exams are just as important with dentures as they are with natural teeth. Even a perfectly fitted denture needs regular checkups. During your visit, we’ll check how your dentures are fitting and take a close look at your gums, tongue, jaw, and mouth from every angle. Simply put, we care about your overall oral health, not just your teeth.

To care for your dentures at home:

  • Remove your dentures overnight to give your mouth a proper rest.
  • Soak dentures in warm water, with or without a denture cleanser.
  • If your dentures have metal clasps, only soak them in warm water.
  • Keep dentures submerged in water when not in use, so they don’t dry out or warp.
  • Never soak dentures in hot water.
  • With dentures removed, gently clean and massage your gums.
  • If brushing irritates your gums, try rinsing with warm water or using a finger wrapped in a clean, damp cloth instead.
  • If you wear partial dentures, continue brushing your natural teeth as usual.

How Much Do Dentures Cost in Toronto?

You can expect to pay approximately $900 to $3,500 or more for full or partial dentures. Denture costs vary quite a bit because there’s a wide range of denture types designed to suit different needs. Full-mouth dentures typically run anywhere from $1,800 to $3,500 and up, while a full set of implant-supported dentures averages around $30,000 as a general ballpark estimate.

So what actually determines the cost of dentures? A few key factors come into play:

  • The type of denture you need, whether full, partial, or implant-supported.
  • Dental extractions or other preparation required beforehand.
  • Any X-rays needed to plan your treatment.
  • Whether you choose supportive dental implants for added stability.

Every case is different, which is why it’s important to speak with a dentist and undergo an oral exam so we can evaluate your unique situation and walk you through the treatment options available to you. We’re happy to provide a more accurate, personalized quote once we’ve had a chance to assess your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental bridges can be used to restore a gap caused by 1 to 3 missing teeth. Any number of missing teeth can be restored using dental implants. Dental implants typically have a higher initial investment cost and certain health requirements to qualify as a candidate for treatment.
With routine care and maintenance, your dentures should be good for 5 - 10 years. Aside from wear and tear on the dentures themselves, your mouth also changes over time and you may eventually decide it’s best to get fitted for a completely new set.
Yes, you can wear your dentures to bed but its recommended that you don’t. You should get into the habit of taking them out at night to soak so you can clean your mouth, gums and remaining natural teeth and then give your gums and jaw a chance to rest.
Your top dentures should suction to your gums. Your bottom dentures float above your gums but stay in place easily. Partial dentures should stay in line with natural teeth without moving very much. Implant-supported dentures snap in place and remain stable. If you’re questioning the fit of your denture, you are welcome to book an appointment so we can check your fit and make adjustments as needed.
After you’ve had some time to adjust to your dentures you should be able to eat almost anything. There are some foods that are hard on your dentures or that might cause rubbing or irritation. Foods that are hard or sticky like caramel, carrot sticks or a tough cut of meat or foods that contain little particles like popcorn or seeded crackers might present some challenge and should perhaps be enjoyed only as an occasional treat.

Amazing experience and great patient care from start to finish as always. The team here at Smyl Bloor is amazing, always making sure to address concerns in a friendly yet professional manner. What was once a one-and-done visit for an opinion on teeth aligners, to actually having them done, had made me considered making them my go-to location for all my dental concerns and regular oral checkups. A huge shoutout to Dr. Yiu and Dr. Matt, technicians Shiva, Joana and Laura, and receptionists Taneshia and Andrea for making me feel welcome on every visit.

I can't recommend Smyl enough. I got all 4 wisdom teeth extracted by Dr. Mat and Shiva. I would suggest to anyone that they are the best people to do it. They made me feel comfortable and safe. Answered any questions I had and explained everything clearly. I was anxious and they definitely helped ease my anxiety. Not to mention I felt absolutely nothing during the process and it was extremely quick. I also got the same treatment from Andrea at the front - she was patient with me and answered any questions I had. The whole team made a really anxiety inducing exprience feel easy and I felt taken care of and supported!

I had been struggling with a very serious dental infection for nearly a year, which unfortunately caused damage to my jawbone and left me in constant pain. Despite visiting several dentists, no one was able to properly diagnose the issue. Thankfully, I finally found an experienced and highly knowledgeable doctor who is truly up to date with modern dentistry. In just one session, all of my dental problems were addressed, and for the first time in a long time, I finally felt relief from the pain. I am incredibly grateful for the care and professionalism I received. The entire team was professional, kind, compassionate, and welcoming throughout the whole process. I sincerely appreciate everything they did for me and would especially like to thank Dr. Yiu and dear Shiva Jan from the bottom of my heart. I truly wish them continued health, happiness, and success.
